Master Residence

The Monastery Master Residences are a spatial manifestation of nature – the principle of “self-so-ness” or primordial naturalness. Rather than standing in opposition to the hilly PEI terrain, the architecture is conceived as a part of the forest’s own unfolding. Every element is attuned to mindfulness and impermanence, utilizing unadorned cedar, stone, and clay that age gracefully with the seasons. These residences are not merely buildings but sanctuaries of simplicity and clarity, where paths and gardens are arranged to encourage stillness and a shared ritual of attentiveness.

In this sanctuary, the material palette of unadorned cedar, stone, and clay honors the concept of Pu (璞), or the “Uncarved Block”. By leaving materials in their honest, raw state, the architecture celebrates a return to simplicity and essence, allowing the residences to age and weather in harmony with the organic cycles of the Dao.
